Black Point Cove Battery, Fort Mason
Situated at the highest bluff on San Francisco's northern coast, the strategic value of Black Point was recognized by the Spanish who placed a five gun, brass 8-pounder cannon battery here in 1797. The battery, having never fired a shot in anger, was rendered useless by neglect and exposure until 1861 when the Civil War caused the battery to be upgraded to 12 gun battery. Once again it was unused during the war and it was proposed in 1866 that battery's location be converted to recreational use. But it wasn't until 1935 and President Roosevelt's WPA program that the area was actually converted into park area. Today the Point is a beautiful picnic area offering views of the Bay, Alcatraz, and across to Marin County.
