Military Helicopters, Over the Golden Gate
In 1990, the San Francisco Bay Area had a large Naval community. The Naval Air Station in Alameda was homeport to aircraft carriers and their support fleet, ships and nuclear submarines were being built at Mare Island, and P-3 Orion submarine hunters patrolled the Pacific from their homebase at Naval Air Station Moffett Field. But base closures in 1991, 1993, and 1995 closed nearly every military installation in the Bay Area. Today the Navy's fleets are concentrated in Norfolk and San Diego, but the Bay Area is still home to 1,800 Coast Guard servicemen and women stationed in ten bases around the San Francisco Bay Area.
